The number of tick-borne diseases is going up. To properly diagnose people's symptoms, it's important to recognize the risk of these diseases in the area.

Tony Galbo has been advocating for greater awareness of the risks associated with tick-borne illnesses. His 5-year-old daughter, Gabby, passed away twelve years ago after contracting Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a tick-borne disease. Her illness wasn't detected in time, according to Galbo.

"It's still being overlooked... Mandatory reporting, mandatory mapping, and public awareness. That's all I'm asking for. If we can start doing that, there will be fewer and fewer missed cases," said Galbo.

In the last two decades, Lyme disease cases have been increasing. It's the most common tick-borne infection in the US, but it's not the only one.

"Factors like changes in the seasons, with summers getting hotter and longer, allow ticks to move into areas that were historically too cold for them. People venturing into areas where they haven't traditionally been can bring them into closer contact with animals and wildlife, leading to disease spillover," explained Dr. Gunter

To protect yourself from ticks, make sure to wear appropriate clothing. After being outdoors, put your clothes through the dryer to kill any ticks. Also, thoroughly check your bod
